Closeout games

One of the two video stores in Jacksonville closed recently and is now selling a lot of its movies and video games. We walked through today and picked up “Star Wars: Episode III,” “Star Wars: Force Unleased,” and “Soul Caliber II” for Playstation 2.

We bought one movie: “Tron” 20th anniversary edition, which Julie has never seen, and which has special features I’m interested in seeing.

Midnight launch

Last night I played "Batman: Arkham Asylum" until about 11:45 p.m., then I went across town to Walmart to see how the launch of "Halo 3: ODST" was coming along. Sure enough, by the time we arrived (12:02) people were already heading to their cars with their recent acquisitions. I proceeded to the electronics section, where they had two cashiers working through the line, it took me less than five minutes to secure a copy. I hadn't purchased any of the "Halo 3" multi-player maps previously, so having all of those on the second disc is a huge bonus. I did start the single-player campaign before going to bed. I mostly wanted to play around with the new (old) pistol. It feels just right, and I had the headshot achievement in very short order. So far, so good. I know I'll really enjoy the "firefight" mode as well, teaming up with three others to take on the computer-controlled swarms will be a blast.

Rainy Sunday

While I was in Bloomington on Sunday, Julie called me thinking I was getting rained on as much as she was.

The National Weather Service in Lincoln recorded rainfall totals from 4.72 to 4.76 inches Sunday in the area around Jacksonville. Lincoln, in comparison, got only 0.67 inches.

A man in our area died trying to unclog a big overflow pipe. [link]

Random Weekend

This weekend was unplanned, I was just looking forward to a break and doing nothing, but we had several nice surprises!

Friday I was able to send my nephew, Ethan, and a couple of his friends to the Cub & Cards game down in St. Louis. My co-worker was unable to use his tickets and we needed to find a use for them within an hour because of the travel time. Leave it to a group of college kids to win the spontaneity award!

Saturday I received a random prank-call from Stirling. We worked together back at Abe-Link, he’s the guy that introduced me to Linux if you can believe that! He was able to come over for a couple of hours to visit. He’s still working in finance, he lived in Japan for a while and most recently Hong Kong, but he’s back in Lincoln until he heads to New York for his next job. It was great to catch up with him, his wife, and daughter. Then I caught up on my “homework” for Financial Peace University. We are really enjoying the class and materials! I often watch Dave’s shows on Hulu too (Yes, I’m the nerd).

Sunday after church, we had dinner with the family, well those that are in town. Emilie is in Colorado for a semester at the Focus Leadership Institute, and Mom & Dad, Katie, Jeff, Kallie, and Taylor are vacationing in Orlando through Tuesday, so we didn’t even need a leaf in the table for dinner!

I’m over my flu, its been great to get back to Karate after missing a week. Ken stopped by Sunday afternoon and offered to repair my recently broken nunchaku… they need to be restrung, and he’s become a pro at weapon repair. Oh, and we actually “kid sat” Noah and Meghan for a couple hours because my sister had a cub scout meeting to attend that evening (that’s a first for us! …it boiled down to a DVD and playing Wii so it went pretty fast).

Overall a pretty random weekend, but a lot of fun!

FB: Tag within status

I just got Facebook’s new tagging within status updates feature today. I’ve been looking forward to getting the feature since it was announced last week.

I’m guessing that you can’t use the feature from the iPhone app, though, or through other third-party apps, like Ping.fm.

PAX ’09 and amazing dining!

Jantina and I are on our way home from PAX 09, we had a great time! We arrived Thursday night, and while still in the airport I met two other fans traveling to PAX. They introduced themselves most likely because I was wearing a “nerd shirt” with the Pac-Man ghosts on it. Actually, even in Peoria, Ill., the TSA agent struck up a conversation regarding video games because of my shirt. Kind of funny, that the 65+ TSA guy and the 20-somethings all have gaming in common.

After checking in to our hotel, we decided to grab a bite to eat. I asked the concierge for a recommendation, and she suggested Red Fin for sushi several blocks away. We really enjoyed it, but had a hard time limiting our selection, so we revisited the very next night for more!

Friday morning we walked to the convention center for the first day of PAX. There was a note on our registration asking people not to show up before 8 a.m., even though the exhibit hall and other events didn’t start until 10 a.m. We figured we would rather be safe than sorry, so we showed up at 8 a.m. to discover a few hundred people already in line J. We obtained our lanyards, and swag bags, and then decided to go upstairs to watch the taping of “Bonus Round.” Right outside of that theater was a handheld gaming lounge with a hundred or so “sumo” bean-bag chairs. It made for a very comfortable wait and we were the very first in line for the event. It was fun to see Geoff Keighley, N'Gai Croal, Brian Jarrard and Randy Pitchford live, and definitely the better choice over rushing the exhibit hall floor with the masses.

We followed that up with the ex-journalism panel (Patrick Klepeck, Karen Chu, Chris Kohler and Gus Mastrapa), some exhibit hall, and the Bungie panel on "Halo 3: ODST" (Marty O'Donnell !). One of my favorite sessions was the taping of “Co-op” a retrospective on the Dreamcast. Matt Chandronait and Jason Bertrand were present, though the rest of the crew was remote from San Francisco.

Our friends Matt and Jenna flew up from San Francisco to meet us Friday night. We had a wonderful dinner and then walked over to GameWorks. Matt and I played several racing games ("Initial D" 3&4), a cool “vs” shooter ("2 Spicy"), and more racing games ("Sega Rally" and some generic Tokyo glowing car game) while Jantina and Jenna played "Dance-Dance Revolution" and a J-Pop guitar game called "Guitar Freaks."

The next morning, we ate breakfast at the Dahlia Lounge before heading to the expo. It was amazing and highly recommended. Once we were at the show, we visited several exhibit hall booths, played "Muramasa," "R-Type," "Need for Speed," "Military Madness," "Mass Effect," "Diablo III," "Starcraft II," and many more. Then we dropped into the Bill Amend (FoxTrot) panel, then the panel on story in video games (with Dennis Dyack, Tim Schafer, Greg Zeschuk, Joseph Staten), and finally the demo of "Star Wars Old Republic." Every panel was well coordinated, interesting, and well paced.

That evening, we went to the James Beard nominee Chef Jason Wilson’s Crush. We missed the location the first time, driving right by, because it is hosted in a re-imagined home. We were very impressed; we couldn’t have discovered a better place for dinner (thanks Jenna!).

After dinner, we went back to PAX and popped in on the Omegathon, Nerdcore concerts featuring Freezepop and Paul and Storm, and then over to GameWorks for the 1up.com community meet-up (Happy Birthday Garnett!). While there, we finished off our game credit from the previous night with Air Hockey, Skee Ball, and some "Ferrari f355" racing. I finally got to bed around 1 a.m. and now I’m on the flight heading back to Peoria, Ill.
